Calculating fuel cost

Divide the distance by 100, then multiply by your car’s consumption in litres per 100km to get the total litres needed. Multiply the litres by the fuel price per litre to get the cost. If you prefer mpg, divide the distance in miles by your mpg to get gallons used, then multiply by the price per gallon (or convert to litres first).

Typical fuel consumption rates

A typical modern petrol car does 40–50 mpg (5.6–7.1 L/100km). Diesel cars often achieve 50–60 mpg (4.7–5.6 L/100km). Hybrids can reach 60–70+ mpg. Actual consumption depends on driving style, road conditions, speed, and whether you’re doing mostly motorway or city driving. Manufacturer figures tend to be optimistic — real-world consumption is usually 10–20% higher.

L/100km vs mpg

L/100km measures how many litres of fuel are needed to drive 100 kilometres — lower is better. MPG (miles per gallon) measures how far you can drive on one gallon — higher is better. Be aware that the UK uses imperial gallons (4.546 litres), not US gallons (3.785 litres), so UK mpg figures are about 20% higher than US mpg for the same vehicle.
