How discounts work

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the saving. Subtract that from the original price to get the sale price. A 30% discount on £80 saves £24, giving a final price of £56.

Finding the original price

Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount as a decimal). If something costs £56 after a 30% discount, the original price was £56 ÷ 0.7 = £80. This is useful when you only know the discounted price and want to work backwards.

Stacking multiple discounts

Stacking discounts means applying them one after another, not adding them together. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is not 30% off — it’s 20% off first, then 10% off the reduced price. The total discount works out to 28%, not 30%.
